What the Spin Reveals: Power, Fear, and Humanity After the Minneapolis ICE Shooting

What the Spin Reveals: Power, Fear, and Humanity After the Minneapolis ICE Shooting

When Renee Goode was killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, two completely different stories emerged from the same event. One side called her a domestic terrorist who weaponized her Honda Pilot, while the other saw a mother trying to escape. As a crisis manager from the Twin Cities, I break down the competing narratives from President Trump, JD Vance, Kristi Noem, Governor Tim Walz, and Mayor Jacob Frey to reveal the five hidden cues in any crisis communication: who gets humanized first, how they treat uncertainty, what the process looks like, what they ask you to do with your anger, and what happens to people who disagree.

This isn't just political analysis, it's a framework you can apply to workplace drama, family conflict, or any situation where someone's trying to control the narrative. You'll learn why Walz's calm messaging worked after he learned from past mistakes, how Frey's profanity-laced response was strategically brilliant, and why the administration's gaslighting playbook falls apart under scrutiny. Once you learn to spot these patterns, you can't unsee them—in politics or in your personal life.

Trigger Warning: This episode discusses a fatal police shooting and contains strong language.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:00.719
Hey there.

00:00:00.880 --> 00:00:03.839
You all know what happened last week.

00:00:04.080 --> 00:00:08.880
Everyone heard about Renee Good, 37 years old, a mother of three poet partner.

00:00:09.199 --> 00:00:16.000
She was shot and killed by an ICE agent, Jonathan Ross, during a federal operation in a Minneapolis neighborhood.

00:00:16.239 --> 00:00:22.559
You know that news reports described her as deeply kind, rooted in faith, committed to caring for others.

00:00:22.800 --> 00:00:26.559
Many people who knew her, her family, uh shared this information.

00:00:26.800 --> 00:00:32.399
Meanwhile, federal officers raced to label her a threat or a domestic terrorist.

00:00:32.719 --> 00:00:37.920
I had recorded a live last week on my Substack.

00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:46.159
I want to encourage you to join me for these lives if you want to dive in deep to news as it's happening.

00:00:46.640 --> 00:00:57.759
But in that live, I wanted to focus less on one side or the other, but just look at what the spin reveals.

00:00:57.920 --> 00:01:02.640
There were definitely competing narratives about power and fear.

00:01:02.799 --> 00:01:06.480
And we heard phrases like self-defense and domestic terrorism.

00:01:07.120 --> 00:01:15.599
And what happened in Minneapolis shows about who gets humanized, who gets dehumanized, but also how gaslighting works.

00:01:15.680 --> 00:01:18.640
And it's not just in politics, it's everywhere.

00:01:18.959 --> 00:01:24.239
Now, many of you know, if you're a longtime listener, a story like this would be very personal to me.

00:01:24.480 --> 00:01:25.120
I'm a St.

00:01:25.280 --> 00:01:29.439
Paul, Minnesota girl, but I grew up, you know, right next to Minneapolis.

00:01:29.760 --> 00:01:34.959
My many of my friends are from Minneapolis because my high school was a Minneapolis suburb.

00:01:35.200 --> 00:01:38.719
And what's happening there is heartbreaking.

00:01:39.439 --> 00:01:41.840
But in this episode, I just want to stay in my lane.

00:01:41.920 --> 00:01:45.840
It's where I work, it's where I live, it's where my value system operates.

00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:47.680
I want to suspend ideology.

00:01:47.840 --> 00:01:51.920
But let's look at the messaging because so much can be revealed in it.

00:01:52.159 --> 00:01:59.760
When big events happen, press conferences, social media clips, competing stories, what I'm looking for is how stories are told.

00:01:59.920 --> 00:02:06.879
So I was looking at statements and press conferences from Governor Tim Walls, Mayor Jacob Fry, President Trump, J.D.

00:02:06.959 --> 00:02:10.560
Vance, the White House, Homeland Secretary Christy Gnome.

00:02:10.800 --> 00:02:20.080
And by the end of this episode, I just want you to be able to look at a crisis, political or personal, and see the patterns because they're all like me.

00:02:20.560 --> 00:02:25.199
Now, in the two competing stories, we had two competing narratives: the federal narrative.

00:02:25.439 --> 00:02:28.479
ICE is under attack by a sinister left-wing movement.

00:02:28.639 --> 00:02:33.919
There's framing about a rise in assaults on ICE agents, 32% or vehicle rammings.

00:02:34.319 --> 00:02:42.000
You know, there's framing about a rise in assaults on ICE agents in the thousands in the percents, vehicle rammings, death threats.

00:02:42.159 --> 00:02:46.240
The officer who shot Renee was portrayed as acting in self-defense.

00:02:46.400 --> 00:02:50.319
The shooting was framed as an attack on law enforcement.

00:02:51.280 --> 00:02:58.879
But we now know, because people are paying attention, that back in 2014, the ICE or U.S.

00:02:58.960 --> 00:03:06.240
Border Patrol guidance said agents shall not discharge at a moving vehicle and should not place themselves in the path of a moving vehicle.

00:03:06.319 --> 00:03:07.840
This is what happens in a crisis.

00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:09.680
People start digging.

00:03:10.080 --> 00:03:17.280
So when you look at that video, you saw Honda Pilot, and how can you not think, okay, there's a mom in that Honda pilot?

00:03:17.919 --> 00:03:21.360
But how do you label that as a domestic terrorist?

00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:27.919
President Trump was sitting with New York Times reporters at the time in the Oval Office when all this was unfolding.

00:03:28.159 --> 00:03:31.680
Really bad timing for him because he had to respond in real time.

00:03:31.919 --> 00:03:36.560
He said, I don't want to see anybody, I don't, he said, quote, I don't want to see nobody get shot.

00:03:36.639 --> 00:03:41.120
I don't want to see nobody trying to, you know, and he was quoted as saying he didn't want to see anyone get shot.

00:03:41.199 --> 00:03:43.840
He didn't want to see anyone get run over by police either.

00:03:44.159 --> 00:03:56.879
An aide brought over a laptop while he was sitting with the reporters, showing footage from KSTP, that's the ABC affiliate in Minneapolis, Twin Cities area, uh, showing an angle from the front.

00:03:57.039 --> 00:04:02.240
And from that angle, it just looked like a car racing down the street.

00:04:02.319 --> 00:04:08.240
And then it would look like, yeah, if there was someone standing in front of that car, that person would be in peril.

00:04:08.479 --> 00:04:10.639
But we've seen so many angles now.

00:04:10.800 --> 00:04:23.600
And I think universally, yes, there's going to be people who say he was in danger, but I think just rational, reasonable people, you know, free of ideology, most would say that it was incredibly unnecessary what happened.

00:04:23.759 --> 00:04:26.079
Chrissy Gnome was down in Brownsville, Texas.

00:04:26.160 --> 00:04:31.680
She was wearing that ridiculous cowboy hat with the podium in front of camouflage netting.

00:04:31.920 --> 00:04:36.079
She said Renee's actions uh were an attempt to cause bodily harm to agents.

00:04:36.240 --> 00:04:39.920
It was an act of domestic terrorism, that she weaponized her vehicle.

00:04:40.399 --> 00:04:44.639
And she also talked about how the vehicle became stuck, ensnared in snow.

00:04:44.800 --> 00:04:52.399
And if you look at the street, there was some snow on the street, but no one was ensnared in snow.

00:04:52.800 --> 00:04:57.519
JD Vance said she aimed her car at ICE officer and pressed the accelerator.

00:04:57.680 --> 00:05:00.639
This was a tragedy of her own making.

00:05:00.800 --> 00:05:03.199
This was an attack on federal law enforcement.

00:05:03.519 --> 00:05:07.680
You can't watch him and not think, okay, he's campaigning.

00:05:07.920 --> 00:05:11.439
He was framing Renee as a victim of left-wing ideology.

00:05:11.600 --> 00:05:13.920
He was also blaming journalists for gaslighting.

00:05:14.079 --> 00:05:16.000
Now it was also the journalist's fault.

00:05:16.160 --> 00:05:19.120
So we clearly see what the federal framing is.

00:05:19.279 --> 00:05:27.120
Now, if you move over to Minnesota, Governor Tim Walls just pulled out of his reelection race last Monday.

00:05:27.360 --> 00:05:29.040
Think about that timing.

00:05:29.279 --> 00:05:30.399
Think about it.

00:05:30.639 --> 00:05:39.279
The week before I had a podcast all about Tim Walls and the lack of leadership during the Somali fraud crisis.

00:05:39.519 --> 00:05:48.879
He was so busy taking the bait from President Trump that he didn't look up and just govern or show people in the state of Minnesota that he was governing.

00:05:49.040 --> 00:06:02.160
But when he opened his press conference, he opened it by naming Renee, naming her family, offering sympathies to the wife, her children, talking about the GoFundMe, thanking Minnesotans for peaceful vigils.

00:06:02.240 --> 00:06:05.199
You know, he said there's a strength in numbers and power and peace.

00:06:05.600 --> 00:06:11.120
Then mentioned ICE mobilization, calling it reckless, and has not made Minnesota safer.

00:06:11.279 --> 00:06:14.399
That's the type of messaging that speaks to constituents.

00:06:14.560 --> 00:06:23.360
He kept saying Minnesota must be a part of the investigation because, from a federal point of view, they were impeding in the investigation.

00:06:23.680 --> 00:06:29.680
Mayor Jacob Fry took a very direct moral line in press conferences, and we all saw this.

00:06:29.839 --> 00:06:34.800
He said, you know, having seen the video myself, I want to tell everybody directly this is bullshit.

00:06:35.040 --> 00:06:41.279
This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in someone dying to ICE, get the F out of Minneapolis.

00:06:41.439 --> 00:06:42.720
We do not want you here.

00:06:42.879 --> 00:06:44.639
That is powerful framing.

00:06:44.800 --> 00:06:52.399
And I posted social media posts talking about, you know, should you drop an F bomb in a press conference?

00:06:52.560 --> 00:06:54.800
Uh typically, no, that would be the answer.

00:06:54.879 --> 00:06:56.079
You don't want to do that.

00:06:56.319 --> 00:07:08.720
But when you are attaching deep emotion to a tragedy and something where you have moral issue with what's happening, it did fit at that moment.

00:07:09.120 --> 00:07:16.720
And Mayor Frye tempered that by publishing an op-ed in the New York Times a couple days later.

00:07:16.959 --> 00:07:23.120
And he wrote about, it was titled, I'm the mayor of Minneapolis, Trump is lying to you.

00:07:23.279 --> 00:07:29.040
And he opened with the 2007 35W Bridge Collapse and mentioned when George W.

00:07:29.120 --> 00:07:38.240
Bush showed up during that disaster as a calming figure and laid out an argument how, as a country, we don't have that anymore.

00:07:38.480 --> 00:07:43.120
We have a commander-in-chief who weaponizes and politicizes events.

00:07:43.360 --> 00:07:54.720
So going to the New York Times with a thoughtful op-ed after that fiery press conference showed that Jacob Fry has a message, he has optics, and he has emotion.

00:07:54.800 --> 00:07:57.920
And it's really what Minnesotans want to see.

00:07:58.399 --> 00:08:00.800
Now let's break down the messaging.

00:08:00.879 --> 00:08:02.160
What is crisis effective?

00:08:02.240 --> 00:08:03.519
What's base motivating?

00:08:03.600 --> 00:08:05.680
What's credibility destroying?

00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:18.879
Tim Walls, when he says, I don't have a predetermined notion, yes, I saw the video, but a thorough investigation will see what happened and come up with a fair and just conclusion, and I will accept that's crisis effective language.

00:08:19.040 --> 00:08:23.600
He acknowledged the video, acknowledged emotion without being inflammatory.

00:08:23.759 --> 00:08:25.519
He refused to prejudge.

00:08:25.759 --> 00:08:33.519
That builds trust and was also a marked difference from how he managed the Somali fraud crisis in Minnesota previously.

00:08:33.759 --> 00:08:37.039
When he talked about anger and nonviolence, he said, don't give them what they want.

00:08:37.200 --> 00:08:38.720
We're not going to win this through violence.

00:08:38.879 --> 00:08:42.799
We're going to win it through justice, through compassion, through Minnesotann-ness.

00:08:43.279 --> 00:08:44.559
That's effective.

00:08:44.799 --> 00:08:47.039
He's speaking directly to an audience.

00:08:47.360 --> 00:08:52.879
Jacob Fry, he was speaking truth to power, direct, like a person, not a politician.

00:08:53.120 --> 00:08:56.320
He says there are multiple videos, multiple perspectives.

00:08:56.480 --> 00:08:59.039
The claims that Renee was a domestic terrorist.

00:08:59.200 --> 00:09:00.399
He's calling bullshit.

00:09:00.480 --> 00:09:02.080
He's calling a part of a lie.

00:09:02.320 --> 00:09:05.519
That heightened language works there.

00:09:06.639 --> 00:09:10.000
It's crisis effective, but also base motivating.

00:09:10.240 --> 00:09:14.240
It's a strategic contrast to Governor Walls.

00:09:14.799 --> 00:09:15.840
JD Vance.

00:09:16.080 --> 00:09:17.919
He said, What you see is what you get.

00:09:18.080 --> 00:09:21.600
That's base motivating mega language.

00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:24.480
But it can also be credibility destroying.

00:09:24.720 --> 00:09:30.399
He got up there and essentially told his truth, which many people see as a lie.

00:09:30.639 --> 00:09:32.080
He's going after journalists.

00:09:32.159 --> 00:09:34.879
He's using the term radical over and over.

00:09:35.440 --> 00:09:39.519
But what are the reasonable people thinking when they're watching this?

00:09:39.759 --> 00:09:48.799
Even if they're not Democrats, they could be Republicans, they could be independents, but they could be looking at the same, what the hell is going on?

00:09:49.279 --> 00:09:52.159
And you cannot suspend either that J.D.

00:09:52.240 --> 00:09:54.799
Vance wants to be the Republican candidate.

00:09:55.039 --> 00:09:57.200
A lot of it is performative.

00:09:58.000 --> 00:09:59.039
Same with Trump.

00:09:59.200 --> 00:10:03.120
And I have to say, he was a little more reserved in his tone.

00:10:03.200 --> 00:10:08.879
From the first tweet that he sent out in the hours after it happened, it was more subdued for him.

00:10:09.039 --> 00:10:14.799
I would argue that he didn't even write the post on X, that it was written by a staffer.

00:10:15.039 --> 00:10:18.399
But Christy Gnome was being so inflammatory with her language.

00:10:18.639 --> 00:10:22.480
I think an option for them was to take it down a bit.

00:10:22.559 --> 00:10:25.200
It gives them room to pivot a bit.

00:10:25.360 --> 00:10:34.720
But Christy Gnome, her lexicon, domestic terrorism, acts of terrors, you really wonder, did anyone show Christy Gnome the video?

00:10:34.879 --> 00:10:41.120
My brain goes to is someone setting her up and not showing exactly what happened in Minneapolis.

00:10:41.360 --> 00:10:48.240
So her language could be called base motivating, it's mega-coded, but also credibility destroying.

00:10:48.320 --> 00:10:52.720
And I'm not saying just from Democrats, I'm saying it from reasonable people.

00:10:53.200 --> 00:10:59.600
She is destroying her credibility within the administration because you see the momentum working against her.

00:10:59.840 --> 00:11:06.879
The federal government is talking about Renee Good as being brainwashed and part of the radical left.

00:11:07.919 --> 00:11:13.919
That messaging may work in other areas, but when a mother like this is killed, it's tough.

00:11:14.080 --> 00:11:27.440
So a crisis management lesson here, if you look at it from a perspective of someone who does this, what I would tell clients in this situation, not federal ICE agents, but something that you have to navigate that's tricky.

00:11:27.919 --> 00:11:35.679
What comes to mind is when clients were asking me about Israel and Gaza and that situation and Palestine's.

00:11:35.919 --> 00:11:41.600
And when clients came to me to talk about Israel and Palestine, they didn't know how to message that.

00:11:41.919 --> 00:11:48.399
And when people ask me, or think about this, if you're asking yourself, how do I message on this issue?

00:11:48.799 --> 00:11:57.600
What that signals is you probably haven't thought about that issue, or you don't have a value system attached to whatever that issue is.

00:11:57.759 --> 00:11:59.200
And if you don't, that's okay.

00:11:59.360 --> 00:12:00.320
Many don't.

00:12:00.480 --> 00:12:04.799
I had a client yesterday who they didn't have a value statement at all.

00:12:04.960 --> 00:12:06.559
We had to work through one.

00:12:06.879 --> 00:12:11.279
But this is why they're important, because value statements are attached to humanity.

00:12:11.440 --> 00:12:13.759
And that is an easy default message.

00:12:13.919 --> 00:12:18.080
It's very difficult to message to politics because there's always two sides.

00:12:18.480 --> 00:12:21.759
But when you start with humanity, that's everyone.

00:12:21.919 --> 00:12:23.279
Everyone's humanity.

00:12:23.519 --> 00:12:26.080
So in this case, it begins with the victim.

00:12:26.159 --> 00:12:31.360
That's what Amy Klobuchar, the senator Amy Clobuchar, is doing speaking about the victim.

00:12:31.519 --> 00:12:33.279
Compare that to the administration.

00:12:33.600 --> 00:12:37.039
ICE is the victim, Jonathan Ross.

00:12:37.279 --> 00:12:40.240
You also want to focus on truth because you have to maintain it.

00:12:40.399 --> 00:12:43.679
You have to find it again if you've lost it, and you have to build on that.

00:12:44.559 --> 00:12:49.600
You also want to manage weaponizing anger.

00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:55.279
It's understandable if you have it in situations and you can use it.

00:12:55.440 --> 00:12:57.759
I'm thinking Jacob Fry in this case.

00:12:58.399 --> 00:13:04.240
He pinpointed his anger in a direction that worked.

00:13:04.799 --> 00:13:13.039
But across the board, anger is not going to carry you through a lot because some people are going to react to that.

00:13:13.279 --> 00:13:18.720
You don't want to weaponize anger, but you can use it if you want to show emotion.

00:13:19.279 --> 00:13:22.559
There's also the psychological layer of gaslighting.

00:13:22.639 --> 00:13:25.840
And Tim Walls quoted 1984 in a press conference.

00:13:26.080 --> 00:13:28.559
It was their final most essential command.

00:13:29.360 --> 00:13:32.879
That is Waltz's saying that the government is gaslighting.

00:13:32.960 --> 00:13:37.120
And gaslighting is always one of the most frequent elements of any manipulation campaign.

00:13:37.279 --> 00:13:41.120
They convince you that you're the problem, they convince you that you're crazy.

00:13:41.440 --> 00:13:44.480
You have to believe what you see, you have to believe what you hear.

00:13:44.639 --> 00:13:48.639
You cannot watch the video of what happened to Renee Good and say she deserved that.

00:13:48.799 --> 00:13:50.879
I don't care which party you're in.

00:13:51.039 --> 00:13:54.320
I don't think any rational person would say that she deserved that.

00:13:54.639 --> 00:13:58.720
If you hear anything else, that's gaslighting.

00:13:59.360 --> 00:14:06.399
The identity scripts, like JD Vance saying you're either a law and order patriot or you're attacking law enforcement.

00:14:06.559 --> 00:14:08.159
You need to stand with ice.

00:14:08.639 --> 00:14:17.120
That is speaking to that mega identity, but also the all lives matter identity from 2020 as well.

00:14:17.360 --> 00:14:24.000
Compare that to Jacob Bry, who wants Minneapolis to be safe and says what the government is doing is the opposite.

00:14:24.240 --> 00:14:26.320
Minnesota is messaging humanity.

00:14:26.559 --> 00:14:29.919
The government is messaging dehumanization.

00:14:30.080 --> 00:14:34.559
And that's not political, that's about messaging around humans.

00:14:34.720 --> 00:14:39.919
So the hidden cues in here for any type of crisis messaging.

00:14:40.159 --> 00:14:42.159
Who do they humanize first?

00:14:42.480 --> 00:14:45.120
In Minnesota, it was Renee Good.

00:14:45.519 --> 00:14:48.320
For the White House, it was the ICE Agent.

00:14:48.639 --> 00:14:50.159
How do they treat uncertainty?

00:14:50.320 --> 00:14:56.960
Do they look at the facts or do they decide the facts at a press conference wearing a stupid cowboy hat when they haven't seen the video?

00:14:57.120 --> 00:14:59.440
What is the process for determining what happened?

00:14:59.600 --> 00:15:01.120
Is Jonathan Ross just going to work?

00:15:01.279 --> 00:15:03.840
Christy Gnome said he was recovering at home with his family.

00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:05.279
Yet we saw the video.

00:15:05.440 --> 00:15:08.320
He was walking down the street after he shot someone in the face.

00:15:08.480 --> 00:15:22.399
And then the video that was leaked, I posted something on TikTok, and I thought that it was from the White House from what I was reading, but it looks like it was leaked from ice because someone wanted to show the ice point of view, which now makes perfect sense.

00:15:23.120 --> 00:15:30.480
In the part where Jonathan Ross, after he shoots Renee Good three times and shoots her in the face, he says eff and bitch.

00:15:30.559 --> 00:15:32.960
And again, I'm not using the expletive in here.

00:15:33.200 --> 00:15:36.480
That was kept in there for a reason.

00:15:36.960 --> 00:15:47.600
It's someone who wants to code it to that law enforcement, F and bitch, she did this to me type of audience.

00:15:48.080 --> 00:15:54.159
Maybe you might find that audience, but you're not going to find a lot of people in that rational audience.

00:15:54.480 --> 00:15:56.799
You're showing what you're doing with your anger.

00:15:57.039 --> 00:16:02.399
And a rational person would say, you took your anger in a gun and you shot a woman in the face.

00:16:03.279 --> 00:16:06.720
Then you also want to look at what happens to the people who disagree.

00:16:07.200 --> 00:16:20.399
You know, Waltz talks about protecting constitutional rights and protecting the freedom to protest, but you can't have damage, you can't have recklessness, you can't have violence in that protest.

00:16:20.960 --> 00:16:30.399
So to show empathy or under more understanding for people who disagree also is good crisis messaging.

00:16:30.639 --> 00:16:36.960
So as a crisis manager, as soon as I accept a job or work, I'm looking at the person at the center, the leader, the team.

00:16:37.200 --> 00:16:38.960
I want to know what's driving them.

00:16:39.120 --> 00:16:40.080
Is it humanity?

00:16:40.240 --> 00:16:41.120
Is it empathy?

00:16:41.279 --> 00:16:43.440
Is it really trying to get to the heart of the matter?

00:16:43.600 --> 00:16:44.480
What's the ethos?

00:16:44.720 --> 00:16:45.679
What's the intention?

00:16:45.919 --> 00:16:49.519
Sometimes I see it clearly, and then I know.

00:16:49.919 --> 00:16:54.559
Recently I turned down work because I could see what was missing there.

00:16:54.799 --> 00:16:58.639
Any messaging that speaks to people at a human level uses empathy.

00:16:58.720 --> 00:17:00.320
That's usually the right message.

00:17:00.480 --> 00:17:02.320
That's a message that gets you through.

00:17:02.480 --> 00:17:07.039
So whether you're navigating a political crisis or a personal one, the dynamics are the same.

00:17:07.279 --> 00:17:09.200
Look for who gets humanized.

00:17:09.359 --> 00:17:11.440
Look for how they treat uncertainty.

00:17:11.599 --> 00:17:13.759
Look for what they do with anger.

00:17:13.920 --> 00:17:19.599
And as always, always, trust what you see with your own eyes.

00:17:20.000 --> 00:17:22.160
That's all for this week on the podcast.

00:17:22.319 --> 00:17:24.880
