Nicole LaPera's Crisis Is Not The Throuple

A self-help influencer with nearly nine million followers is being sued by her own business partner, who is also one third of her marriage and, according to the filings, the person who wrote her books. That is the story everybody is going to tell. It is not the story worth your time.

Molly's read is narrower and harder to shrug off. The throuple is not the crisis. The lawsuits are not the crisis. Nicole LaPera — The Holistic Psychologist — built a brand on one asset, and it was not her writing. It was trust. People did not follow her for an opinion about a restaurant. They followed her with their actual lives, at $24 a month, often instead of seeing a therapist. That is the highest trust bar in content, and it is the only thing she could not outsource.

Then the receipts stopped agreeing with each other. Her own 2023 book credits Jenna Weeklen as an essential member of the team who brought communication and leadership. Her court filing says all books were written solely by LaPera. Both sentences were produced by the same brand. Only one of them can be true.

This is a breakdown of a crisis, not a takedown. Ghostwriting is not the scandal — plenty of people use ghostwriters and when it is disclosed, nobody is harmed. Molly hired one herself, and says she should have hired one sooner. The scandal is that the publisher and the author are telling two different stories about who wrote the book, and the audience does not have to decide who is lying. They just quietly stop believing you.
